Penn Animal Blood Bank (PABB) Donor Eligibility As a result of the growth in veterinary specialty services, the demand for blood transfusions has risen dramatically. Specialties such as emergency medicine, critical care, internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, and oncology have created a need for more and different blood. VHUP averages 300 transfusions per month as blood and blood products are used to support animals with anemia, bleeding and some other conditions. Similar to the Red Cross, our volunteer donor program, "Pets Helping Pets" allows healthy pets to donate blood. Each donation of whole blood can be processed into components such as packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelet rich plasma and cryoprecipitate. Thus, one unit can serve more than one patient. Our canine supply is supported primarily by the Bloodmobile, which is used for blood drives several days each week at local veterinary hospitals and breed clubs. In addition, VHUP staff/student pets donate during in-house blood drives. new volunteers are always needed as the availability of blood products can sometimes mean the difference between saving a life or not. The Penn Animal Bloodmobile visits each donor site 6-8 times per year and each donor can give 1 unit every 6 weeks. Each donor must be between one and ten years old, a minimum of 50 pounds (10 pounds for cats), in good health, current on vaccinations, not in estrus, and presently not on any medication other than heart worm preventative. Several blood tests are performed prior to donation to ensure adequate health status. In addition to a yearly health screen, dogs and cats are given a bag or case of Hill's Science Diet Maintenance each time they donate. No sedatives or restraints are used so pets must be relaxed and comfortable during the collection process. Pets are never asked to do something they are not "in the mood" to do. If you are interested in sponsoring or participating in a blood drive, please call (215) 573-PABB.
