Instructions for Blood Typing & Crossmatch Sample Submission Have your veterinarian draw a blood sample into an EDTA blood tube (1-2 ml for dogs and cats, 0.3 ml for very small kittens). Ensure the tube is correctly filled. Label the tube with the animal's name and date of collection. Wrap the tube with padded packaging material for shipping. To avoid breakage use a box for mailing. In order to achieve good quality results the sample must be kept cold during transport: - include 1 large or two small ice packs but ensure the ice pack does not directly contact the sample as freezing will cause problems. Complete the submission form or at least include information on the animal's name, age, breed and sex for each sample being submitted. Also include any comments regarding breeding problems (neonatal isoerythrolysis) or previous transfusions. If a special crossmatch is being requested please have your veterinarian contact the Transfusion Laboratory before shipping to discuss any special requirements. (The direct number is 215 573 6376) The fee for blood typing is $25.00 per sample. The fee for crossmatching for 2 donors is $40.00. Please include payment with your sample in the form of master or visa card information or make out a check payable to “Trustees, University of Pennsylvania/Dr. Giger ”. Please ship samples Monday-Wednesday to ensure they arrive on a week day. They should be sent by 2-day delivery. Typing results will be sent by mail on a weekly basis, while crossmatch results will be reported immediately. If an email address is included, and if requested, a preliminary result will be sent via email. Please also see http://www.vet.upenn.edu/penngen for further information. Ship to:
