Feline AB and Canine DEA 1.1 Blood Typing

General Sample Submission Form
Instructions on Sample Collection and Submission
Information on Canine Blood Types
Information on Feline Blood Types
Information on Blood Cross Matching

Description:
Just like humans, dogs and cats have different blood groups. In order to avoid transfusion reactions and feline neonatal isoerythrolysis (hemolysis of newborn), it is important to perform blood typing on canine and feline blood donors and anemic or bleeding patients as well as breeding cats. Blood typing uses anticoagulated blood and species-specific reagents to determine which kind of cell markers, i.e. blood type, an individual has. The surface of a red blood cell includes genetically determined markers or antigens against which antibodies can be produced. Cats have naturally occurring antibodies, whereas dogs only produce antibodies when an individual is exposed to red blood cells of a different blood type by a transfusion.

The Transfusion Medicine Laboratory at VHUP will perform blood typing on any dog or cat and cross matching in complicated situations. For instance, our laboratory has typed over 10,000 cats and established blood type frequencies for many breeds.

Required Samples:
EDTA Blood, 1-2 mL in a Purple Top (instructions)

Price:
Blood Typing - $20 each
