Instructions for Sample Submission
Samples can be submitted directly to any of the laboratories
as a consequence of your pet being a patient at VHUP, or indirectly via submission
of the appropriately handled sample through the mail. Breed-specific DNA tests
can only be run on EDTA blood (purple-top tubes) or cheek
swabs. Referring veterinarians, breeders or pet owners should use the specified
test or General Submission Form that can be found on the Forms
page. Descriptions of the various tests and instructions for proper collection
and mailing of samples will be found in association with those submission forms.
VHUP personnel may use the Medical Genetics
Service Form (PDF)
to accompany samples from patients.
Check List For Sample Submission
- Ensure that all samples are marked clearly on either the blood
tube itself, for EDTA blood submissions, or the cheek swab sleeve and Ziploc
bag or envelope, for cheek swab submissions, with:
Date
Animal's Call Name
Owner's Last Name
- In the case of blood sample submission, package the blood so
that tubes will not break. They should be sent by 2-3 day delivery and do
not need to be refrigerated. Cheek swabs can be sent via regular post.
- Enclose a check for $75 per animal, made out to the Trustees
of the University of Pennsylvania.
- Enclose completed submission forms for each animal being tested.
- If you wish to ensure that samples have arrived, please do
not contact the laboratory directly, but rather do one of the following:
Send the samples via a carrier that allows you to track shipments
Include a stamped, self-addressed card in your shipment
Arrange for a return receipt
