VCSP630, Fall 2003
The aim of this course is to correlate clinical and basic science information in comparative hematology. Faculty from the Veterinary School and Medical School will present recent developments in clinical medicine and basic research on disorders of hematopoietic cells and blood. Informal lecture presentations will allow ample time for discussion. Grading is based on attendance, participation, and a paper on a suitable topic related to hematology.
Suggestions for paper preparation:
· Select a specific topic in hematology based upon your interests, knowledge or personal experience.
· Research the topic (literature search) and identify original studies (at least one recent paper published in the past three years). The veterinary librarian, Barbara Cavanaugh, is available to help you perform a literature search in case you experience difficulties.
· Focus on a certain aspect of a topic. You may quickly target a specific area of interest, but only a review of the literature can help you to narrow the specific content of your paper.
· Present your topic and relevant literature to the course organizer (in person or via email at giger@vet.upenn.edu) before October 5 for approval prior to beginning writing your paper to ensure that the topic is suitable for this course.
· Papers should be approximately 4-6 pages in length and include appropriately referenced (journal style) information with 2-3 new/original papers. Your paper should not be a review of reviews. You may reference reviews (e.g., textbooks, class notes, chapters) as a guide/introduction to your original papers.
· Papers should be submitted no later than Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at 5 pm to Dr. Urs Giger, VHUP 4021 (there will be a folder on the door for your papers).
Grades for this course will be included with grades for the second quarter, available in January 2004. Graded papers will be returned to your mailboxes after final grades have been submitted to the Office of Curricular Affairs.
